I'm trying to figure out why my system isn't rendering text correctly in console boxes on a GUI (x-window) like desktop, yet they render correctly in a console alone outside of the GUI.

Here are the notable examples:

  1. The minicom terminal program: If I don't launch X windows and I just run minicom, the borders are normal with lines around the blue box edges. If I run minicom inside "konsole" (a terminal program for the X system) then instead of lines around the box, I get the "@" symbols as the box border.

  2. Colours of file listings: If I run ls without launching X, then some filenames appear in colour. If I do it on "konsole" and run ls on the exact same folder, then every item is listed in the same color.

I also download some simple scripts that use the ncurses library and they too have the same effect as minicom has.

How do I go about fixing this?

I'm running WindowMaker as my primary X application.
