I have 2 machines (both ubuntu) connected through a network switch. Please see the picture below for the details on hostnames and ip address. So the two machines are called ubuntu and manifold2. On ubuntu I am running a docker container with hostname happy_go. I need each machine to be able to ping to other machine. I know this can be accomplished with docker port forwarding. But that will not work for me.

Currently, of the 3 ping pairs, the pair that doesn't work is ping from manifold2 to happy_go. On manifold2 I tried to add a static route

sudo ip route add 172.17.0.0/24 via 192.168.2.199 dev eth0

Still no luck, I believe something need to be done on the host ubuntu. Help appreciated.

  • Is Ubuntu set to forward packets for 172.17.0.0 to docker? I.e., is the device set to a) be routing, and b) do you have an iptables rule to do so?
