why does my .srt appear as timecodes instead of the subs?

I'm using textedit and I followed the format but when I open my srt file in vlc, it displays the timecode instead of the subs.

You have formatted it wrongly. If you provide an example of what you have done then people might be able to tell you what you are doing wrong.
