Is it possible to replace conhost.exe with a later version (or ConPty) meant for W10?

-1

I have a bunch of machines running on W8.1, which is obviously getting dated, but for various reasons I cannot update these machines for some time, but I would like to take advantage of the new Console Pseudo Terminal (ConPty) with 24-bit color and many other graphical capabilities, now available on the Windows-10.

From MSDN blog site:

  • conhost.exe - is the user-mode Windows Console UX & command-line plumbing

  • condrv.sys - is a Windows kernel driver providing communication
infrastructure between conhost and one or more Command-Line
    shells/tools/apps

enter image description here

Question:
Can I take a Windows-10 conhost.exe (or ConPty.exe) and put it on a Win 8.1 system?

Well, just try it and see.

  • If that's what I wanted to do and risk crashing the machine, I wouldn't have bothered asking here. Not very scientific, nor helpful comment.

  • Only someone who tried it can answer your question, and you can always rename the exe before copying it to the same folder.

  • Yeah, I guess this require a proper VM test, but was hoping to find someone who already know what is going on and what other dependencies are required to make it work. I know people have replaced cmd with success, but this is really a quite fundamental (and new) piece that relies on many other DLL,s etc. I'm pretty sure that if the binary crashes right-way, for any reason, then the machine will not even boot up.

  • Don't think so. If it can't work it will probably not even start.
