Why are speedtest.net results limited to <300 Mbps on Mozilla Firefox but not on Google Chrome?

0

Speedtest.net results using Google Chrome are consistently 700+ Mbps. No matter what I do I can’t get Mozilla Firefox to go over 300 Mbps.

I get the same results with Waterfox and Pale Moon and get the same results when I run Firefox in Safe Mode. I don't have a firewall or anti-virus software. Fast.com shows the same thing (under 300 Mbps using Firefox and well over 500 Mbps using Chrome).

Does anyone know why Firefox is limiting downloads to 300 Mbps?

  • I don't have an answer or clarification, but I can confirm this is the issue. I work for an all fiber ISP, we offer download rates up to 1Gbps, but FireFox can't get anywhere near the speed of Chrome for several months now. We don't allow our techs to use it anymore and instruct customers to not use if for speedtests.

  • Some reports place the blame on the multiprocessor architecture introduced in Firefox 57. Try in about:config to set browser.tabs.remote.autostart to false. If there are multiple results, set them all to false and restart Firefox.
