VMware Workstation - VM wont open, goes to blank white screen
Yesterday I was working on a VM and when I tried to shut it down, it told me I had process or job that was still running and it was trying to shut it down. It went for about 30 minutes until I just stopped vmware with process explorer. Now when I try to open the vm, it starts Workstation, but shows the white background with the text "There are no open virtual machines. Select an item in the library to open it in a tab."
It's driving me a bit insane, I have a backup of this VM from several weeks ago, but going back that far will result in a lot of lost work, which I'm hoping to avoid.
edit: I want to add that there are no error messages when opening the .vmx file. It just goes straight to Workstation, but doesn't open anything.

Have you tried reattaching the VM?

What is your host OS? What version of VMware Workstation are you using? When you select the VM in the library, it should show you an error message if it fails to open it. If not, you can check the UI log (Help > About will show the location of the file). FWIW, since this seems to be a problem opening the.vmx
file and not when powering on the VM, there's probably nothing wrong with the virtual disks.
