Laptop display issue

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad which is a couple of years old. I am having an issue where I am getting checker boxes randomly but regularly on the laptop display. I also get intermittent freezing with a message that the display has stopped responded but has recovered.
When the laptop uses an external monitor, there is no issue.
Any likely suspect on this issue?
Thanks.

Can you provide a puc with the boxes? If they are consistent and look like the IS windows its likely an os/driver issues, otherwise its likely a hardware issue.
