Correlating scanned data with information in a spreadsheet

I have a spreadsheet that I use to track laptops and users of those laptops. I would like to be able to scan a users id card (with a barcode scanner) and have that scanned data correlate to information such as the name of the user. The scanned data is unique to the individual and I can create a database where that data is matched to the full name of the user in a different part of the spreadsheet; the question is, how can I use that to automatically populate a specific field in the spreadsheet with the name?

VLOOKUP
orINDEX/MATCH
are likely candidates but it's hard to say with no sample data
