Backup: should added “par2/parchive/redundancy” happen before or after compression?

0

As the question states, the goal is to generate a backup. I indend to compress the files as not use accessive space on the one hand. On the other hand I fear data corruption (such as bit rot, disc rot) could happen to the media I use (mostly hard discs), which I would like to guard against by using systems like par2, par2commandline, parchive

My doubt is, hence the question:

Should the parchive/par2 file be made of the uncompressed original data, or the compressed form of the data?

To be explicit:

Having a file to backup, which is amenable to compressin (i.e. large English text file novel.txt) should I create a par2 file before its compression, or should it be compressed first and become novel.txt.gz and be then supplemented with a par2 verification/repair file?
